Tikkun olam, which in Hebrew means to "fix the world", is the driving principle behind the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society's work. Founded in 1881 as an organization to rescue persecuted and oppressed European Jews, today HIAS assists Jewish and other refugees and migrants escaping violence, repression, and poverty to find safety and security in the United States, Israel and elsewhere. To date, HIAS has helped more than 4.5 million people worldwide.
